From Microsoft to AI Tutoring: A 27-Year Journey
Excerpt: After decades building enterprise products at Microsoft, Amazon, and T-Mobile, I set out to solve a problem that's been bothering me: why does technical education still feel like 1999?
I have a confession. For the better part of three decades, I built things that made large companies more efficient. I worked at Microsoft during the years when Windows was eating the world. I shipped products at T-Mobile when mobile was the frontier. I helped FCB Global navigate what "digital" meant for a global advertising network. I built systems at Amazon that operated at a scale most engineers never see. Somewhere along the way, I filed a US Patent, co-founded a couple of startups, and accumulated the kind of scar tissue that only comes from watching products succeed, fail, and everything in between.
And through all of it, one thing kept nagging at me.
Technical education is broken. Not in the way people usually mean when they say that -- not "universities are too expensive" or "bootcamps are too shallow," though both are true. I mean something more fundamental. The way we teach people to build technology has barely evolved since I was learning it myself.
The Video Lecture Trap
Here is what technical education looks like in 2026: you watch a video. Someone explains a concept while you stare at their screen. Maybe they have good production values and a nice microphone. Maybe there are animated diagrams. Then you pause the video, switch to your code editor, and try to replicate what you saw.
If it works, great. You move to the next video. If it does not work -- and it usually does not, because your environment is different, your version is different, your understanding is slightly off -- you are on your own. You Google. You ask ChatGPT. You paste error messages into forums and hope someone answers before your motivation dies.
This model was fine when the pace of technological change was measured in years. Learn Java in 2005, and your knowledge was relevant in 2008. Learn React in 2018, and the fundamentals still apply in 2021.
But AI does not move like that.
The Speed Problem
In the time it took me to plan and build this platform, the landscape shifted under my feet multiple times. Models got faster and cheaper. New patterns emerged. Tools that did not exist when I wrote the first line of code became industry standard before I shipped.
This is the reality facing anyone trying to learn AI agent engineering today. By the time a pre-recorded course is published, a meaningful percentage of its content is already outdated. Not wrong, exactly -- the principles hold -- but the specific implementations, the best practices, the tooling? Those move at a pace that no video series can match.
And yet that is still how most people are trying to learn this material. Watch, pause, replicate. Watch, pause, replicate. Like learning to drive by watching dashcam footage.
The Gap Nobody Is Talking About
Here is what I observed from the hiring side of the table, across every company I worked for: there is an enormous and growing gap between people who can use AI and people who can build with AI.
Using AI is table stakes now. Everyone has ChatGPT in their browser. Everyone has Copilot in their editor. That is not a differentiator. That is the baseline.
What companies desperately need -- and cannot find enough of -- are people who can architect multi-agent systems. People who understand when to use a pipeline pattern versus a hierarchical delegation pattern. People who can build reliable, cost-controlled, production-grade AI applications that do not hallucinate their way into a lawsuit or burn through $10,000 in API costs overnight.
That is not something you learn from a video. That is something you learn by building, making mistakes, and having someone who has been there explain what went wrong and why.
Why I Decided to Build This
I could have kept consulting. The hourly rate for someone with my background who understands AI systems is, frankly, absurd. But consulting is one-to-one. You help one team at a time. And the need I was seeing was not one team -- it was an entire generation of developers who needed to level up, fast, and had no good path to do it.
So I made the decision that probably looked irrational from the outside: I would build an AI tutor platform. And I would build it using the exact technology it teaches.
Not as a gimmick. As a proof of concept. If the AI agent architecture we teach is sound, then a platform built on that architecture should be able to deliver a better learning experience than anything a human instructor could do alone. Not because AI is smarter than a good teacher -- it is not -- but because AI is infinitely patient, always available, and can adapt to each student in real time.
The tutor does not move on until you understand. It does not get frustrated when you ask the same question three different ways. It does not lose track of what you struggled with last Tuesday. And it teaches in the language you think in.
Bilingual From Day One
That last point matters to me personally. I am bilingual. I think in both English and Spanish, and I know from experience that the language you learn in shapes how deeply you understand the material.
The Latin American tech community is massive, growing, and dramatically underserved by quality AI education. Most of the best content is in English. Translations, when they exist, are afterthoughts -- awkward, literal, stripped of the nuance and personality that make technical writing stick.
So we built the entire platform -- the tutor, the content, the RAILS framework, everything -- in both English and Spanish from the start. Not translated. Written. There is a difference. The Spanish content was authored to feel native, not converted. Because a developer in Bogota or Mexico City or Buenos Aires deserves the same quality of instruction as a developer in San Francisco, and they deserve it in the language where concepts click fastest.
RAILS, Not Tutorials
If there is one thing I learned from 27 years of building products, it is this: people do not need more information. They need better judgment.
The internet is drowning in tutorials. How to call the Anthropic API. How to set up a LangChain pipeline. How to deploy a model to AWS. Step one, step two, step three. These tutorials are fine for what they are. But they teach mechanics, not judgment.
Judgment is knowing when to use a pipeline and when it will collapse under real-world complexity. Judgment is understanding why you need cost controls before your first user signs up, not after you get a $476 bill because your API key was in the wrong configuration file. (Ask me how I know.) Judgment is recognizing that the architecture decision you make in week one will either save you or haunt you for the life of the product.
That is why we built the RAILS framework -- Reference Architecture for Intelligent Learning Systems. RAILS are not tutorials. They are portable, enforceable patterns that encode expert judgment into repeatable rules. Each RAIL addresses a specific failure mode that I have either experienced firsthand or watched someone else walk into.
When our AI tutor teaches you to build a multi-agent system, it does not just show you the code. It explains the RAIL. It tells you what can go wrong. It asks you to predict the failure mode before revealing it. And when you build something that violates a RAIL, it catches it -- not with a red X, but with a conversation about why that pattern fails in production and what to do instead.
Teaching Confidence, Not Just Competence
Here is what I really hope students take away from this platform, and it is not what you might expect.
Yes, I want them to understand agent architectures. Yes, I want them to be able to build pipeline, parallel, and hierarchical systems with their eyes closed. Yes, I want them to know how to track costs, handle errors gracefully, and deploy with confidence.
But more than any of that, I want them to finish this program believing -- knowing -- that they can build their own AI systems. Not copy them. Not configure them. Build them.
There is a moment in every engineer's career when they stop feeling like they are following instructions and start feeling like they are making decisions. That transition -- from executor to architect -- is the most important thing that can happen in a technical career. And it almost never comes from watching videos.
It comes from building something real, hitting a wall, understanding why you hit it, and finding your way over it with guidance from someone who has hit the same wall before.
That is what this platform is. Twenty-seven years of walls I have hit, distilled into an AI tutor that is patient enough to let you hit them yourself and wise enough to help you understand what happened.
What Comes Next
I am not naive about what we are up against. The AI education space is crowded. Everyone and their cousin has a course. The incumbents have brand recognition, marketing budgets, and established audiences.
But none of them have what we have: a platform that practices what it preaches. An AI tutor built on the exact architecture it teaches, in two languages, with cost controls, topic boundaries, and a pedagogical framework designed by someone who has spent nearly three decades learning what works and what does not.
I built this because I believe the next generation of AI engineers should not have to learn the way I did -- by trial and error, alone, hoping the documentation was accurate. They deserve better. They deserve a tutor that adapts to them, challenges them, and never loses patience.
And honestly? After 27 years of building products for other people, it feels pretty good to build one that might actually change how people learn.
